SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

American School of Yaounde (ASOY) is a non-sectarian, independent, coeducational school offering a rigorous US-style educational experience plus the IB Diploma Program (DP) in grades 11 and 12, the Middle Years Program (MYP) in grades 6-10 and the Primary Years Program (PYP) in grades Prek-3-5. ASOY embraces the rich cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity of its international faculty and student body. ASOY was founded in 1964 in order to provide an English medium comprehensive program primarily for American families based in Yaounde’, Cameroon, Central Africa. ASOY is an American-sponsored international school, with support from the United States Embassy in Yaounde and the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools.

ACCREDITATION AND MEMBERSHIPS

ASOY is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). ASOY is also a member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) and an associate member of the West African International Schools’ Athletic League (WAISAL). ASOY is an IB World School offering the IB Diploma Program since August 2016 as well as the MYP program in grades 6-10 starting in August of 2019. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education.

STUDENT BODY

The student body is international, consisting of students from  32 countries. ASOY expanded to include grades 9-12 in the fall of 1996. We will graduate 18 seniors in 2024.

SCHOOL YEAR AND SCHEDULE

The school year (180 days) is divided into semesters; one beginning in mid August, one beginning in mid January.  Our schedule allows high school students to enroll in 8 courses per year for grades 9 and 10. Grades 11 and 12 may enroll in 7 courses per year.  Each class meets a minimum of 205 minutes per week.

GRADING SYSTEM

Grades are issued on a semester basis, and each semester is recorded on the student’s permanent record (transcript). End-of-year exams are given in most courses. Credit is given by course; one full credit is awarded for successful completion of a year-long course and reflects only courses taken at the American School of Yaounde. Grades from previous schools are not included on ASOY’s transcript. The American School of Yaounde does not weight courses since 2018.

GPA

Grade point averages are determined from the final grades of all ASOY classes completed in grades 9-12. Due to the complexity of our student population in regard to language, culture, diversity, scholastic backgrounds, and our small size, we have chosen not to rank our students.
