Physical Education and Health Philosophy
Physical and health education aims to empower students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active and develop the motivation for making healthy life choices. To this end, physical and health education course foster the development of skills and attitudes that will contribute to a student’s balanced and healthy lifestyle. Through opportunities for active learning, courses in PHE embody and promote the holistic nature of wellbeing. Students engaged in PHE will explore a variety of concepts that help foster an awareness of physical development and health perspective, empowering them to make informed decisions and promoting positive social interaction.

Physical Education and Health Belief Statement
We believe students learn subjects in Physical Education best when they:

  • use inquiry to explore physical and health education concepts
  • participate effectively in a variety of contexts
  • understand the value of physical activity
  • achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle
  • collaborate and communicate effectively

Physical Education and Health Program Objectives and Goals
The goals of the MYP Physical Education program at the American School of Yaounde are to encourage and enable students to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about health and physical activity in order to identify and solve problems
  • Analyze, evaluate, and perform, through inquiry design, a plan in order to improve performance in physical and health education
  • Develop and apply practical skills, techniques, strategies, and movement concepts through their participation in a variety of physical activities
  • Enhance their personal and social development, set goals, take responsible action, and reflect on their performance and the performance of others.

Physical Education Course Descriptions

Grade 9
Students are responsible for and applying skills in four content areas: team sports, individual sports, aesthetic activities, and health. They begin to apply biomechanical principles to skilled movement and physiological principles to achieve and improve physical fitness. Students regularly reflect and evaluate and adjust goals during each of the physical education units. Each student will understand the benefits and importance of lifetime fitness. Students use appropriate social interactions and decision-making skills and demonstrate respect for differences in culture and abilities. Health education focuses on knowledge, examines attitudes, and formulates lifestyle behaviors in mental, physical, social and emotional areas of health education. The goal is to progress from applying, evaluating and analyzing to demonstrating skills in a more sophisticated way. Students are responsible for an aesthetic movement presentation and a community-based project.

Grade 10

The goal is to continue progress in demonstrating skills, attitudes and understanding showing a high level of mastery. Each student is responsible for an aesthetic movement presentation and a PHE based project.
